Interview for: Brenda Pyle

What made you self publish through 2 Moon Press?

I read an article in the Marshall Advisor about a new publishing business that was offering a contest to high school students to publish their written work. I thought if they were willing to work with students than possibly I could submit my book for review.  Worst case scenario, the publishing company would reject my manuscript.

What was the reason you wrote the book you did?

My grandson wanted to read a book about deer hunting. We drove to the public library and looked in the children section for a book.  We went through the card index file and found nothing. Our search continued, another library, another disappointment.  Upon returning home, we searched the internet at favorite book sites.  Again, nothing for elementary students on deer hunting.   As a family, we had gone deer hunting with our children for years.  I could write my grandson a story.  He went home that evening and I started writing.  As I wrote the memories came flooding in. What great times we had as a family during deer season.  It didn’t take long and I had the book “ The Young Hunter” written.

The next time my grandson came over, we read the book together. He loved it.  Already inspired by his father about deer hunting, I think he daydreamed his way through the book becoming “ The Young Hunter” as he read each chapter.

Do you find writing easier at a specific time of day?

Anytime is good. I just need to be alone and without noise.

Why do you write in the Genre/subject that you do?

“The Young Hunter” was written because we couldn’t find a book in the library about deer hunting. I never thought about writing for children until then.

Who inspired you if anyone to begin writing?

My grandson inspired me to write, “ The Young Hunter.”  Imagine, writing a paragraph about an imaginary friend.  Once the paragraph is written ask an artist to draw the character based upon your paragraph. It’s an amazing experience that everyone should get the opportunity to try just once. I am now hooked on writing children’s books.  I find the idea of writing another children’s book exciting and fun.

Who is your favorite author?

I have favorite books that I have read more than once.  It’s not possible for me to have a favorite author. I love books. What I find the most exciting is each time I read a book for a second time, I pick up on a scene or conversation that I missed on the first read.  I select books to read based upon the adventure or the plot outlined in the synopsis.  Every time I read a new book, I have a new favorite author.

So far what is your opinion of 2 Moon Press?

I think they have a lot of patience with new authors. As in any profession, there are steps to be followed to bring a task or a project to completion.  2 Moon Press  provided the instruction I needed to understand the publishing process. They answered my questions and offered suggestions.  It has been an enjoyable experience.

Do you have anything in the works coming soon?

I do.  I have written a second book titled, “Noodle”.   From my point of view, it is going to be a great read for children.

What do you feel is the biggest hurdle for authors today?

I cannot speak for other authors.  The biggest hurdle I had to overcome was  believing that I could get my writing published.  I always knew I could tell a story, but was it a story that a publisher would want to market or that others would want to read.  (Frightening ).   When 2 Moon Press accepted my manuscript it gave me the confidence to continue with the publishing process and to start a second book.

Tell everyone why they should buy your book?

It’s a unique subject for a children’s book.  The book is designed for both excellent readers and for children who need pictures to help them comprehend.  The book has a crescendo in each chapter until the plot is revealed  that reminds me of riding a roller coaster as a child.  It has a realism but is not scary. The book introduces children to nature, wildlife, gun safety, deer hunting and family fun.
