What is publishing Sunday, August 28th, 2011 11:27am
Recently I read a blog post online that made me feel a need to talk about publishing, and the various types. The question that has been debated over the internet for years has been an argument over who is actually published.
| I am, no you are not I am. No you are not I am... Yadda, Yadda, Yadda. |
To address this you have to understand without agenda and or hype what self publishing is, what POD publishing is, what "Traditional" publishing is, and finally what kind of publishing 2 Moon Press offers, Simple as that. You have to know the information before you can make a decision. There are indeed four kinds of publishing, and each one has it's fit and author type who feels comfortable with it.
SELF PUBLISHING This is where you design it, lay it out, do the cover, do the editing, arrange all marketing... This is what Create A Space is, as others. Nothing wrong with it, however know that YOU are where it starts and stops. YOU make the cover wrong a little bit, they will print it, you do not lay that book out right. They will print it. Yep you get to buy inexpensive books, however cheap is, as cheap is... You get a cheap book. Once that WILL break easily on the spine, look at the edge of the spine, they use brown glue, this is a brittle glue. Your book will not hold up. Self publishing has it's fans. However know it all falls on you.
POD This is similar to most pay to publish operations out there. They may design it right, they may have ala'cart editing services, however their are two problems with this usually. First they set the retail price, and usually the retail prices are so far out of whack that you won't sell book. Second is they use tactics designed to make you buy thousands of them. Plus again poor quality. OH and not to mention unoriginal, template book covers.
TRADITIONAL PUBLISHING Ideal way, they way everyone dreams of right? Well, yes and no. Traditional publishing is where a large house picks up your book, they will take the reigns, spend money to market it, get you noticed. Well the truth of the matter is simple. Just because you are "picked up" by a large publishing house, does not mean you will be published by them. 2 Moon Press has 3 current authors who had their books picked up (non 2 Moon books) and they have been waiting years... for them to release them. Not quite the market time yet they are told. Not to mention what you agree to. You WILL sign over "Creative Control" rights to them. They can change characters, places, plot, etc... I worked for two of them, I know and I know what the behind the scenes of it is. If that is ideal to you, then keep sending query letters and submissions. However do your homework, as each publisher has their own specific requirements.
THE 2 MOON WAY Not the ideal way for everyone. Not the end all be all way to get published. We do have a niche' for a specific author type. However, we are an amalgam of all the above. We offer specific services, that I am not going to list here as they are all over our site. However the bloggers attack was unfair as we do offer a lot to the author that other publishers do not. Every cover we do is custom. We ave the awards to prove it for them. Editing is by far the best priced in the industry. Plus our fees are frankly when you see what you get the best in the industry. We do not over price our books either. Best of all YOU approve it all, we show you everything for your approval, so you know what will be on a book shelf.
Ultimately you as an author have to determine what you "want" when you publish. Some authors like the total control of Self Publishing, however also like the ultimate responsibility. Some strive to have DelRay represent them. Some want books, cheap as they can get. There is no bad way to publish. There is no wrong way to publish. There is only what you want, and feel comfortable with.
THE BIGGEST LIE OF PUBLISHING Simply put, is that...
If you pay to be published then you really are not published.
This is a frank lie, and so wrong. Being published is having a book in print that is edited, covered in eye catching art, laid out professionally, bound professionally, ISBN numbered, EAN numbered without a 9000 number, and online, and in stores for sale. THAT! Is being Published...
What do you want...
