Custom Covers. Why? Thursday, August 18th, 2011 11:09pm
I have been asked by a friend who owns a publishing business in North Carolina, WHY? Do I waste my time with custom covers for the authors of 2 Moon Press?
Why do custom covers. After all, it is easier to do templates. Customer picks background, font, title layout and BAM! Congratulations Author you have a cover. Well that is all well and good, however I am old school. What is "Old School?" Well I am an author also, and I would never settle for a cover that was a template. What is the advantage of a custom cover over a template. After all, with a template we could cut the publishing time down easily by 2 - 3 weeks.
Authors would love that right?
Well yes they would love the faster time frame. However, seeing several books on their publishers web site with the same layout on them, and same imagery would not be fun. Custom covers bring something to the table that templates do not. That something is the WOW factor. People DO judge a book by it's cover, and people do pick books up that look good, and also unique. I am guilty of this also. However, template have a BLAH factor. Now am I attacking publishers who use templates. No, I am not. If their authors are happy with blase' blase' covers, that some other author will also be picking soon, then so be it. Best case scenario with publishers who use templates with their covers, is they will ave what is called the 399 option.
This is where the publisher "UP" sells the author a custom cover for usually, 399.00, and then usually even then there is no heart in the cover. The story is unique, and the cover is what tells the reader to PICK ME UP! So does it not make sense to have the cover also unique? |
